MidDec

Redesigning appearance of the radon detector

MidDec is a company based in Sundsvall, Sweden. They develop radon detectors. Radon is an invisible gas formed in the Earth’s crust. It surrounds every one of us as part of the air we breathe. MidDec’s radon sensors measure in real-time, the amount of radon in a facility. Due to its size and speed, the radon detector can be used in several different applications, like surveillance, alarm, and control. Connected to a PC, it can be used to investigate problems with radon.

I got in challenge to update MidDec’s current radon detector appearance due to its scary-looking appearance. The final look was aimed to fit to home and office environments without looking suspicious.

To activate the radon sensor, simply press the button located on the top of the device. Alternatively, you can utilize the accompanying app to effortlessly monitor and regulate the air quality. When the device is activated, it displays either a vibrant green or a striking red, providing a clear indication of the presence or absence of radon in the air.

The design of the product is meticulously crafted to resemble a globe, exuding a friendly and approachable aesthetic. Unlike other technical devices that may clash with the overall decor of a house when visible, this product seamlessly blends in, resembling a tasteful lamp or decorative object commonly found in our homes. By incorporating elements that we can easily relate to, my intention was to create a product that harmoniously integrates into our living spaces.
