Redesigning Sundsvalls Stadsbibliotek.
Balance quiet reading with social interaction.

Overview
Sundsvalls Stadsbibliotek wanted to stay a place of quiet reading while also becoming a more welcoming hangout for teenagers and young adults — two needs that, on the surface, pull in opposite directions.
As the lead designer, I started with in-depth user research — shadowing visitors, mapping behavioral patterns, and surfacing the friction points that kept the two groups from coexisting. The redesign reorganizes the floor plan into clearly zoned acoustic and social areas, with thresholds, materials, and lighting doing the heavy lifting instead of signage.
“A library for everyone means a library where everyone can be themselves—whether that means being loud with friends or quiet with a book.”
The Challenge
Increased socializing among young visitors disrupted the peaceful reading and studying atmosphere—the library risked losing its core function as a calm, focused environment. The challenge was to redesign the interior so it could simultaneously support quiet reading and social interaction, without letting one compromise the other.
The Solution
Create a clear separation: a cozy, calm reading/study area for those who seek focus, and a dedicated social zone for teens and groups—ensuring both groups could coexist peacefully. Social zones were relocated nearer to staff for better supervision.
Spatial Redesign
Understanding Behavior
Through on-site observation, I analyzed how different user groups moved through the space, where conflicts arose, and what activities disrupted the reading environment.
Reworking the Layout
The spatial layout was reorganized to create clear zones. The yellow circle (originally in the red marker location) became a dedicated study and focus room. The green circle was relocated and transformed into a hang-out area where teens could socialize with friends.

Study & Focus Room
A calm, study-friendly environment designed for individual focus and quiet reading.

Vibrant Social Zone
A dedicated hang-out area where teens could gather with friends, featuring bold colors and flexible seating. The blue circle was decorated by a famous graffiti artist from Sundsvall, creating an authentic connection to local youth culture.

The Outcome
The proposed redesign aligns the physical space with the library's mission of inclusivity. By acknowledging the diverse needs of youth, we turn a space of conflict into a community hub.
Compliance Achieved
Meets requirements of The Library Act (2013:801) and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Safety Improved
Clearer sightlines and zoned activities reduce opportunities for illicit behavior.
Engagement
Creates specific reasons for youth to visit beyond "hanging out," increasing engagement with library resources.
