Creating a safer environment

Nestled in the heart of Sundsvall, Sweden, Sundsvalls Stadsbibliotek is a library with a difference. Located close to Kulturmagasinet and Magasinsparken, it offers visitors a peaceful and secure environment for studying and reading. However, with visitors using the library for other purposes, it disturbed the peace and reduced security for others.

Our team at Mittuniversitetet took on the challenge and spent two full days at the library, speaking to the target group and observing their behavior. We discovered that the young people who visited the library didn't have a suitable space to socialize with friends. This led to a loud and overcrowded corner of the library. To address this issue, we decided to revamp the library's spaces and improve its decor to move these young people closer to the staff.

The result? A cozy and relaxed reading and study room, with comfortable sofas and a peaceful atmosphere. We aimed to encourage more visitors to use the library for its intended purpose and create a safer, calmer environment for all.

PROJECT

The yellow circle was moved from the red marker to another location. Instead, the room marked in red was developed into a study and focus room.

The green circle was moved from the red marker to another location and became a hang-out area where teens could be with their friends.

The blue circle was decorated by a famous graffiti artist from Sundsvall.
